Bluepaw shared tongues with Sparrowpaw. They seemed
happy, so Ivorypaw didn't say anything. "Wait, Ivorypaw."
Ivorypaw turned, it was Sparrowpaw. "Yes?" she croaked.
"What's wrong?" He pondered, turning his head to one side.
"Erm, nothing it's just that.." she trailed off. "What?" he
demanded, yet in a kind tone. "I didn't expect you to be with
Bluepaw..." Before she said anymore she ran to the section
where her Clan were gathered. She looked back, Sparrow-
paw shrugged and turned. Why did I say so much? Ivorypaw
thought. Then she heard someone call her name. It was her
mother, Rainpool.
"So, who's your friend??" She purred. "What? Who..?"
Ivorypaw questioned. "Well, I saw you with that Sparrowpaw
cat yesterday morning, is he your friend?"
Ivorypaw shook her head, she didn't want to look like she was
betraying her clan. "Mother, I was just telling him to leave our
territory!" she lied. "I see, well, just rest here." Rainpool padded
the patch of leaves next to her. Ivorypaw kneaded the bed
and layed down.
"Hello? Hello? Where am I?" Her voice echoed through the
white, hollow moorland. "I'm here." A voice replyed. "A Cat of
flesh and bone can defeat a cat of stone."
"Where am I!?! Who are you!?!" Ivorypaw yelled back.
"You know who I am." Ivorypaw was so confused. She didn't
know what to do. She charged toward the voice. A dark
shape appeared at the edge of the moor. Amber eyes gleamed.
Her eyes lit up with happiness as she ran. She kept running,
never reaching him. "Only life can defeat death"
Her eyes opened. Her sight was foggy, it was night. Every
cat in the forest was asleep. "Ivorypaw?"
whispered a dark gray cat. His yellow eyes were deep.
"Sparrow...paw...?" Ivorypaw stood up. "Why were you
here sleeping when everyone else was together and happy.
You missed the Star shower, everyone was having fun.
But you weren't." Ivorypaw was confused. He didn't really
care about her, did he? "I'm sorry, I guess I thought Bluepaw
would steal our friendship." She defended herself.
"Ivorypaw, how could you think that? We're best friends. But
Bluepaw is my friend too... and I didn't want to give our
opposite Clan bond." "The Warrior code shouldn't band
friends from being friends in public!" She didn't mean to
come out in such a rude tone. Did she really just mock StarClan?
Sparrowpaw sighed. He didn't say anything. Ivorypaw looked
into his eyes. "I'll be back later... Maybe." He concluded.
Ivorypaw was angered. "What? Do you think you can just make
being from different clans' an excuse to ignore me?
"Hey, I remember my friend being a little more nicer." He
retorted. "Fine, I guess I'm not your friend anymore." She
couldn't believe what she just said. Did she just end her
first friendship? Sparrowpaw turned, and looked down.
She lay back down. Her eyes closed, her last vision being
Sparrowpaw, hatred in his eyes.
When she woke up she felt better. She tried to pretend that
what happened was a dream, yet it wasn't. Then she noticed
she had woken up early. "Hey, Ivorypaw," It was Shrewnose.
She was a lean, light brown she-cat with a nose that could
trick a fox to think she was a very large shrew. "Hi, Shrew-
nose" No one else had waken up so she replyed in a whisper.
"Hey, since no one is up yet, would you like to go hunting
with me?" She smiled. Ivorypaw's stomache growled fiercly.
She hadn't eaten since yesterday.. when Sparrowpaw and
her had exchanged prey... "Sure! But where do we hunt?"
Ivorypaw sprang up at the word 'hunt'."Back in our territory,
we need to check on the Warriors guarding the camp,
rogues could be anywhere." Ivorypaw didn't want to wait!
But she must follow the Warrior code to become a Warrior.
Besides, Shrewnose was her mentor, this could be the day
she evaluates her hunting skills!
The two cats carefully stepped around the pools and tried
to avoid waking anyone. Ivorypaw was about to jump into
the stream when her mentor said:"Stop!" Shrewnose had a
stern look on her face. "Remember what I told you? Always
test the water before plunging in, we don't need another
sick cat." Ivorypaw bowed her head, embarrassed. "Sorry.."
"You won't be saying sorry when you get carried down the
stream and into The Great Falls, young one." Shrewpaw gave
a look of humor in her eyes. Shrewpaw dipped her paw into
the stream. Ivorypaw saw a rush of chill go through her
body as her fur stood up."Early Leaf-bare?" She pondered.
"Look, down the stream a little further are the stepping
stones." Ivorypaw looked up at her mentor. "But, those are
FireClan's stepping stones..." "Yes, they are, but we'll only
be on the edge of the territory, we're not hunting there."
Shrewpaw spoke clearly.
Shrewpaw put one paw after another carefully. Ivorypaw
followed her every step. Cold water rushed between the
rocks. She carefully placed her other paw on the next stone.
She didn't notice the rock was wet, suddenly she lost her
balance. She hit her head on the rock and fell into the
rushing water. A surge of chill went through her, paralizing
her. "Ivorypaw! Swim!" Shrewnose cried. But she couldn't.
She plummeted into the watery abyss. Then she realized that
this stream was flowing towards The Great Falls. She
couldn't imagine what would happened to her if she was
carried all the way down there. She couldn't breathe. She
panicked and flayed her arms and legs. She tried to grip the
sides on the trench. She managed to pull her head up to the
top and take a breath. She gaped. She was nearing the Falls.
She said a silent prayre to StarClan: Please, let my Clan live
on. Let them not mourn for me. Just... keep Sparrowpaw
safe.
Ivorypaw felt her heart pound, she was only a fox length
from her watery, long, rocky death. She toppled over the
edge, but didn't fall. She opened her eyes, her sight was
foggy. Something had her in their jaws. She still couldn't
breathe. She looked down, she dangled above rushing water
and sharp rocks. With a strong tug, she was pulled out of the
water and on the dry land. A paw pressed her chest, water was
pushed out of her lungs. She could breathe. She looked
around. She was on FireClan territory. Who saved her?
She saw movement in the bushes. She lay back down.
Today wouldn't be the day she joined StarClan.
